Your AC Is Fine. Your House Just Isn't Dehumidifying.
Musty closets and sweating grills in April and May? Your AC isn't broken - it's just sitting idle during shoulder season. Why sensible cooling can't solve a latent moisture problem, and how standalone dehumidification bridges the gap.
We get more calls in April and May than almost any other stretch of the year, and the complaint is nearly always identical. "Something is wrong with my AC." Humidity is creeping up. The supply grills are sweating. Closets smell musty. The windows are fogging. So the homeowner calls their HVAC company, a tech comes out, checks the system top to bottom, and tells them everything looks fine.
Because it is fine. The AC is not broken. It is just not running enough to manage moisture.
What is actually happening
We are entering shoulder season, that stretch from late March through May, and again in the fall, when daytime temperatures are warm but not hot enough to drive much air conditioning runtime. Your thermostat is satisfied at 74, so the system cycles down and mostly sits idle. Meanwhile, outside, relative humidity is climbing into the 70s and 80s. Vapor drive does not take a break just because your compressor did. Hot, humid exterior air is still pushing inward through every material in your envelope, and now there is nothing mechanically pulling that moisture back out.
This matters because of how air conditioners are designed. They are built primarily for sensible cooling, which means managing temperature. Moisture removal is a byproduct of runtime. When the system runs long cycles on a 98 degree day in August, it pulls a tremendous amount of water out of the air as a side effect of all that runtime. But in shoulder season, those long cycles never happen. The system short cycles or barely runs, latent moisture accumulates inside the house, and that is when the symptoms start.
This is not an air conditioning problem. It is a dehumidification problem. And the two are not solved by the same machine.
The fix is a standalone dehumidifier
We believe every home in the Houston market should have a standalone dehumidifier. Standalone meaning it operates independently of the AC system, not bolted into the air handler. It needs to run on its own schedule, based on humidity levels, not on a temperature call from the thermostat.
In a two story home, our preferred installation taps off the upper floor return, runs that air through the dehumidifier, and discharges warm, dry air out over the stairwell. That creates a dry column of air at the stairwell connecting all the floors. Moisture then migrates toward that dry column thermodynamically. You do not have to force it. Stack effect carries humidity upward to the return, where it gets captured. It is elegant, and it works.
But do not just go buy one
Here is the important caveat. A standalone dehumidifier is genuinely effective against the shoulder season problem, and for a lot of homes it is exactly the right answer. But humidity is a symptom, and the dehumidifier might not be the whole story. Sometimes there is air leakage pulling humid air in, a mechanical system that is oversized or misconfigured, or an envelope detail quietly feeding the moisture. When that is the case, a dehumidifier will still help, but it will be working a lot harder than it should to cover for something else.
So before you go out and buy one, it is worth understanding the full picture. We run the same thorough process on a shoulder season complaint that we run on any moisture problem. Find the root cause first, then spec the equipment. Most of the time the dehumidifier is still part of the answer. We just want to make sure it ends up as the right sized, right placed piece of a house that is actually working, not a band aid stuck over a problem nobody bothered to look at.
If your house is misbehaving this spring, this is very likely part of what is going on. Your AC is doing its job. It just was never the right tool for this particular job.
